Holkham Hall

The Challenge

Holkham Hall sits on the north Norfolk coast at the heart of a 25,000‑acre estate. The seat of the Earls of Leicester, it is an elegant eighteenth‑century Palladian house and a lived‑in family home, renowned for its architecture, collections and landscape.

In 2016 the estate opened The Lady Elizabeth Wing, a contemporary events space in the former pottery building near the Hall. Designed by Hopkins Architects, it offers state‑of‑the‑art facilities for over 250 dinner guests, 320 conference guests and 400 for a reception, with the flexibility to combine with other estate venues.

Holkham asked E+M+C to help launch and grow a coherent events business around the new Wing, while safeguarding the estate’s heritage values and maintaining the warmth of a family home.

Our Approach

Since 2017 E+M+C has supported Holkham in establishing and promoting Holkham Events, with a focus on positioning The Lady Elizabeth Wing for both private and corporate markets. Key initiatives included:

• Clarity & Direction – defining the role of The Lady Elizabeth Wing as the estate’s contemporary flagship within a heritage setting, articulating how it complements the Hall’s historic spaces and wider estate locations.
• Market Reach & Influence – creating an events marketing plan that targets weddings, conferences, dinners and concerts, leveraging the Wing’s capacity and year‑round capability, and promoting the option to combine spaces across the estate.
• Systems & Structure – setting budgets, pricing frameworks, booking processes and supplier protocols to ensure smooth delivery for planners, caterers and production teams.
• Revenue & Performance – building a five‑year business plan with clear revenue streams and KPIs, aligning capacity, rate strategy and diary management to profitable utilisation.
• People & Culture – assisting with team recruitment and training to embed professional standards of service that reflect Holkham’s family ethos and the expectations of high‑value clients.

The Results

The Lady Elizabeth Wing is now firmly positioned as a flexible, modern venue within a prestigious country house estate. It accommodates conferences, dinners and receptions at scale, and is established as a distinctive setting for weddings and celebrations.

Holkham Events operates to agreed budgets and processes, with a professional in‑house team and trusted partners behind the scenes. The Wing’s offer integrates seamlessly with other estate spaces, giving organisers a broader palette for multi‑space programmes and high‑impact productions.

E+M+C’s Eddie Hoare is retained to support delivery against the five‑year plan and to sustain momentum across sales, marketing and operations.
